Justice was served on Uduak Akpan who raped and murdered a young female job seeker, Iniubong Umoren last year in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Delivering judgement Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court Uyo ordered that Akan be hanged until his is confirmed dead for the rape and murder of Miss Umoren whom he had lured to his apartment in pretense of giving her a job. It was a saga that shocked the nation.
Akpan who was also convicted of rape and would serve a life sentence, attempted to escape after the judgement was read. However, he was stopped by Court security officials.
Asked what were his remarks on the murder case, Akpan sounded out: “My Lord, I am not guilty.”
The judge reminded him that his plea had already been taken at the start of the trial.
Akpan then responded: “My Lord, in our country, there’re many assassinations, but nobody is doing something about it.”
His father and sister who were also facing trial for accessory to murder were discharged and acquitted.
