World 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan has called on Nigerians and those in authority to pump more funding into track and field saying Nigerian athletes have potential to do much more.
Tobi who also added the Commonwealth Games gold and games record to her resume after her stunning performance at the World Championships in Oregon USA, said based on the exploits of Nigerian athletes at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games the good old days of Nigerian track and field is back.
“Nigerian Athletics is BACK… With more support we will dominate the World,” Amusan posted on her Facebook page.
Nigerian athletes have always contented with lack of motivation, administrative bottlenecks, uncommitted sports officials in their pursuit of track and field glory. But somehow they have always produced a sprinkle of heart-warming results.
Amusan ran 12.12 seconds in the semi-final of the Worlds, and in the final she did a 12.06 which was judged wind assisted. The 12.12 seconds is the fasted any woman has ever ran over the hurdles. She went ahead to the Commonwealth Games to run 12.30 seconds to win a back to back CWG gold.
