Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, scored his first Premier League goal to hand his new club Nottingham Forest a win they’ve waited for in 23 years. They defeated West Ham at the City ground that has not hosted any top flight match for quite a while.
Awoniyi, bundled in a rebound from a Jesse Lingard’s strike in the added minutes of the first-half to become the first Nottingham Ham player to score an EPL goal since 1999. Forest fans had waited 8,492 days to sing their famous anthem ‘Mull of Kintyre’ ahead of a Premier League match and the team put in a performance worthy of the wait.
Before Awoniyi’s goal the Hammers were denied by VAR in the 42nd minute, but they came out strong in the second half, however, Forest keeper Dean Henderson did well to ensure Steve Coopers men took all the three points as he saved Declan Rice’s second-half penalty.
“We were good in the first half and we took the game to West Ham. I’m disappointed not to score before we did, said Cooper.
“It was a good fortune that we scored a goal. We have to take a lot of confidence from the win. We got a lot of new players, we have to gel and the match has been helpful.”
