Nigerian athletics is reeling once more from a doping mess. A positive test has been returned by a juniour athlete from the last World Athletics Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia.
Though the Athletics Federation of Nigeria is trying to hush the details, it was gathered that high jumper, David Aya who posted 2.15m to win the last National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020 is in the centre of the storm.
“We haven’t concluded our investigations and so we can’t confirm anything,” said an AFN top official.
“All I can tell you for now is that Aya is a very promising high jumper.”
The athlete was listed for the high jump at the World Juniors but he posted a no mark during the qualifications rounds and subsequently scratched out the event, which was later won by Jamaica’s Brandon Pottinger with a mark of 2.14m.
The AFN it seems is still unable to present a clean team at international meets. At start of the season no dope test was done at any of the meets athletes participated in. And during the World Championships and Commonwealth Games the athletes were made to bear the cost of their where about tests as it was made a condiciton for them to be on the team.
