Former Liverpool player Michael Owen, said Calvin Bassey didn’t do enough to stop Joel Matip from scoring a late winner in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Ajax at Anfield.
Bassey, who was a major doubt for Ajax ahead of the game until the moment Matip scored for Liverpool, had an excellent game. Scores were at 1-1 and Liverpool struggled to find a way through the Ajax defence.
The former England striker believed Ajax could have gone away with a point, but for the loss of concentration by Bassey.
“Look at the Ajax players. They are all marking.
“And then apart from that you basically got everybody paired up and it’s Bassey.
“Bassey is actually keeping his eye on Matip and eventually, just look through the bodies, he’s [Bassey] the closest one to him [Matip] so it was his man he [Bassey], simply doesn’t do enough.
“He lets him get a run on him and you can’t do that,” said Owen while analysing the game on BTsports
Bassey had played four straight Dutch League games for Ajax without conceding a goal since joining in the summer. He was also a stand-out performer in their first Champions League match against Rangers.
