The Independent Electoral Commission has removed over a million voters from the register for the 2023 elections.
According to INEC the delisted voters were those who registered between June 2021 and January 2022 to vote. But through the verification process and cleaning up, it was discovered that these new voters failed to meet required standards.
INEC stated that during the period 2,523,458 people registered but records of 1,126,359 registrants were discovered to be ”invalid and subsequently delisted,” due to ”double, multiple and ineligible registrants” were detected.
The electoral body explained that it was using an automated biometric identification system in verifying the voter register. The commission says at the end of the process, the register will be published for “scrutiny, claims and objections by citizens.”
