Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has been cleared by the Senate to continue on the job as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Ariwoola became acting CJN after Justice Tanko Mohammed resigned from the post after he was smeared by allegations of corruption by the Supreme Court.
The Senate had received the request to confirm Ariwoola from the President Muhammadu Buhari, but they couldn’t sit to do the screening because the senators were on break. On resumption Wednesday, confirming the CJN was the first task the Senate had to do. Senator Abdullahi Gobir brought the notice of confirmation to the floor.
Gobir moved that the Senate do consider the request of the president on the confirmation of the nomination of Justice Ariwoola for appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria in accordance with Section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
