National Association of Nigerian Students has discontinued the suit it filed against the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria. The case asking the Court to compel ASUU to call off its seven month old strike was filed by the factional president NANS Umar Faruk Lawal. But when the case was mentioned for hearing Tuesday, Mr. Lawal notified the Court of his intention to pull out of the case and consequently, presiding Judge Polycarp Hamman halted proceedings in the matter.
Mr. Lawal hinged his decision to withdraw from the case on the leadership tussle in the Student body. Lawal a student of Bayero University Kano, claimed to have won the NANS presidential election, but this was disputed by NANS Convention planning committee, it declared that Mr. Usman Barambu is the president elect of the student body.
Meanwhile ASUU is sticking to its guns, insisting that the strike will continue, despite the NICN ruling last week ordering the lecturers to return to work. The union filed a 14 point appeal challenging the order. The suit was filed by the ministry of labour and employment praying the court to compel the lecturers to end the strike.
