The granddaughter of world-famous former music star Bob Marley has been widely criticised for modelling a ‘White Lives Matter’ outfit which was designed by rapper Kanye West.
Selah Marley is the granddaughter of Reggae icon Bob Marley and daughter of singer Lauryn Hill and she chose to help Kanye launch his new clothing line at his YZY fashion show.
The ‘White Lives Matter’ slogan has been linked to the Ku Klux Klan and parodies the popular ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, which aims to further the cause for racial equality primarily in the USA but also worldwide.
The fashion show took place on Monday and it was a surprise event. Kanye was wearing a black sweatshirt with ‘White Lives Matter’ written across it.
Models in the rapper’s show also wore clothing with the message written across it, a response to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement that was founded in 2013 following the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman.
Selah posted video showing her talking and joking with West at the event. In the video, Selah is wearing a ‘White Lives Matter’ shirt.
“Love you Kanye West” was how she captioned the video, with Selah posting three videos in total showing her wearing the controversial item.
In 2017, she described Kanye West as one of her role models.
“He’s been through a lot of persecution in the media and by people, but it doesn’t stop him from being who he is,” Selah Marley said.
Kanye has distanced himself from the mainstream of black politics and issues, aligning more with the right wing in America, as was exhibited by his relationship with former president Donald Trump.
