Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is dangling a $40,000 reward to each Rivers United player if they beat Wydad Casablanca Athletic Club and qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
The first of the qualification tie comes up at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday and according to the sports loving Rivers governor winning both legs is a must for Rivers United. Rivers Commissioner for Sports Chris Green, said Rivers United are highly motivated for the clash against the defending champions and the players are determined to reach the final of the competition and give Nigeria football image a boost.
“The Governor has also announced that if you qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, you will receive $40,000 (41,000 euro) each,” Green told the team.
Rivers United won their first ever Nigeria Professional Football League title last June and Wike paid each player $20,000 for their efforts. Though it is a tall order against the Moroccan side that beat 10 time winners Al Ahly of Egypt 2-0 at home to win the 2021 title, Rivers United have proved to be worthy competitors in the Champions League so far.
