As floods continue to ravage parts of Nigeria, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu said Wednesday, that the Lagdo Dam release by Cameroon was not the major cause of flooding in the country.
Adamu who was speaking before the Senate Budget committee in Abuja said excessive rainfall was the major cause of flooding adding that the Lagdo Dam release was just one percent. He said there was no record of agreement with Cameroon on the construction of a buffer dam, adding the Federal government however, is keen to build the Dasin Dam to control overflow from Cameroon.
Adamu said Cameroon did not inform Nigeria about the release of water from the Lagdo Dam until 24 hours after it was released.
About 603 persons have lost their lives and over two million people displaced in three months of rainfall and the dam release in Cameroon. Hardest hit are Anambra, Bayelsa and Delta, Kogi and Benue states that have banks on the River Benue and River Niger.
