Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said his team struggled against Southampton in their 1-1 draw at St Mary’s as the Gunners dropped points for the second time in the Premier League.
Arsenal peppered Southampton in the first quarter of the game with Gavin Bazunu denying Gabriel Jesus. Martin Odegaard dragged a shot wide inside 10 minutes. However, Southampton didn’t learn their lesson and Arsenal took the lead with just 11 minutes on the clock.
Ben White linked up with Bukayo Saka down the right flank before chipping a ball into the box. Xhaka was there to meet it and the midfielder fired into the roof of the net on his right foot, making it two goals in one week.
Stuart Armstrong dragged Southampton level soon afterwards when the home side caught Arsenal on the break. Elyounoussi cut inside past Takehiro Tomiyasu and played Armstrong in, and the Scot made no mistake when finishing into the bottom corner.
“We had three or four good opportunities and should have scored more,” Arteta said.
“We needed two or three goals, but only scored one.
“It’s disappointing. We created enough chances but couldn’t put the ball away.
“It’s a lesson because we wanted to win again. They put us under more pressure through direct play in the second half, and we were struggling.
“We just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. We had enough chances to get the win. It’s very disappointing.”
