The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken possession of 40 properties belonging to embattled former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
The order for seizure of the properties including lands and houses was given by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday, following an ex-parte motion filed by the EFCC. The properties are in Enugu 10, Lagos 1, Abuja 15, Dubai 9, USA 3, UK 2.
Justice Inyang Ekwo the presiding Judge ruled that the EFCC must publish the interim forfeiture of the properties in a national daily within seven days of the judgement. He adjourned the case till December 5 2022.
Ekweremadu is currently behind bars in the UK where he is facing charges for alleged organ harvesting. Hearing on the case has been adjourned till early 2023. He was arrested alongside his wife in July for allegedly bringing a minor to the UK to harvest his organs. His wife was granted bail, but the Senator was denied.
Meanwhile a case brought by an Enugu lawyer, O.A.O Onyeama asking a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu to declare Senator Ekweremadu’s Enugu West senatorial seat vacant is still pending.
Ekweremadu through his lawyers have challenged the court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter.
