With only 18 days to go for the 21st National Sports Festival, host Delta State is in a race to complete some of the major facilities that will be used during the Games.
Of major concern is track and field. As at yesterday, the tracks have not been laid and also the hammer, shot put and discus cage has not been provided. Officials of the local organising committee are now in a race to get the tracks, score board and the ball games facilities ready before the November 28 opening day.
During the inspection tour of facilities by the Sports Minister Sunday Dare and Main Organising Committee, Delta was given a pass mark with regards to facilities on standby, but checks revealed that the Sports Hall inside the Stephen Keshi Stadium is still not ready for use.
However, an associate of the co-chairman of the Local Organising Committee Tonobok Okowa assured that the track facilities and others would be ready before the sports fiesta begins.
“The containers carrying the tracks have arrived in Asaba and we are going to begin the laying of the tracks on Friday so everything is on course.
The tracks, the tennis courts, the basketball court and others, before the opening day ceremony will be ready,” said the source.
Delta had 18 months to get its acts together after it was awarded the hosting after the Edo 2O2O NSF which was shifted to 2021, because of the Covid ’19 worldwide lock downs.
