Anambra State Sports Development Commission chairman Patrick Estate Onyedum, said his focus would be to produce champions through a well thought out grassroots development programme.
Speaking ahead of the Delta 2022 National Sports Festival, Mr. Onyedum stated that there are potentials in Anambra, fishing them out and training them would be aggressively pursued.
“We will be in Asaba and we will do our best but we are not under pressure.
“We are working with the existing programme, for the new Commission under my watch we are working on a long term grassroots sports development strategy that will produce the next generation of champions,” he said.
Onyedum decried the poor state public sports facilities in Anambra and emphasised the need to bring them back to good shape.
Speaking in the same vein, veteran coach Johnny Igbokan said the first to this sports development drive would be take sports to schools.
“We are looking at training games masters in the schools.
“After that we would look at competitions where talents would be discovered and then get a training programme.
“In the next two or four years we are sure to have a base of athletes that would do the State proud in future sports contests.”
