Technical and logistic hurdles almost forced a postponement of the Warri Effurun Peace Marathon, but organiser have decided to press ahead since elite and local athletes have started arriving Warri for the event billed for Saturday, November 26.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the WEPM, Mrs. Joyce Bozimo, it is the passion for the sport and the bid not disappoint the athletes that have kept the event from being iced, consequently, the prize money and other activities have been scaled back.
“We regret to announce that there would be a 50 percent cut in the prize money,” said Mrs. Bozimo.
“Things did not go the way we expected it and so we have to drastically cut our budget. But it is just for this edition. After things settle down politically, we will have a big and better 2023 Warri Effurun Peace Marathon.
The first prize winner in elite category will take home N500,000, second is N300,000, third N200,000 and forth N100,000. For the local athletes category first prize N300,000, second N150,000, third N100,000 and fourth N50,000.
The corporate relay challenge that was also scheduled to make its debut have been put on hold till the 2023 edition.
