Indomitable Lions of Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has been sent back home after a training row with coach Rigobert Song.
According to reports Onana questioned coach Song’s tactics during training for the match against Serbia. Song the former Cameroon captain wanted Onana to avoid taking risks around his goal area and play more directly, but the goalkeeper and his coach openly disagreed and almost coming to blows.
The Inter Milan keeper was on duty when Cameroon lost 1-0 Switzland in their opening game, but he has now been ejected from camp for arguing with the coach. Back-up goalkeeper Devis Epassy started against Serbia and Song has told Onana, who has 35 caps for his country, to leave the Cameroon camp.
However, sending Onana home could cost Cameroon. As Epassy according to analyst has glaring deficiency which came to play against Serbia.
In the game against Switzerland Onana took 61 touches in Cameroon’s 1-0 loss to Switzerland, 24 of which came outside the box, setting a new record for goalkeepers at the World Cup. A key part of his game was playing out from the back, something that Epassy didn’t do, regularly booting the ball down the pitch. This style clearly didn’t work against Serbia and they even conceded as a result of it.
