Nigerian singing sensation Temilade Openiyi a.k.a Tems, etched her name further into the annals of music when she won a Grammy award for her song ‘Wait for you’ featuring rapper Drake. It is a great achievement for an artist who’s been on the music scene for less than 10 years. She has elevated herself to the class of creative musicians like Adele and Alicia Keys. Her music is melodic and her voice is captivating and little wonder she won the Grammy in the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category. This recognition is coming after her song ‘Lifft me up’ done by Rihana for Black Panther Wakanda Forever was nominated for the Oscars in January. Tems,27, is naturally drawn to music and everything fell into place for her when she started learning production skills on Youtube and in 2018 herself produced debut song “Mr. Rebal” was released in 2018
Top artists like Davido, Whiz Kid not her prowess and started featuring her in their works. She did “Know your worth”with Davido and “Essence” with Whiz kid in 2020. She remixed version of Essence with Justin Bieber earned her a Grammy Award nomination. She was signed by RCA records in 2021 and she released “If Orange Was a Place”.
Throughout her career, Tems has received many accolades, including a Grammy Award, two NAACP Image Awards, two BET Awards and two Soul Train Music Awards. “It is incredible, I get to work with people that five years ago were on my playlist,” Tems said while reacting to her award. “I was jamming with them and now I am working with them, it is such a pleasure and I feel like this is just the beginning.”
