Contrary to reports Ghana’s footballer Christian Atsu has been brought out alive from the rubble of the devastating earthquake that has affected both Turkey and Syria, the player is still missing.
According to Gurbey Kahveci who is Hatayspor football club doctor, Atsu is nowhere to be found in any hospital and he is unaccounted for.
Kahveci told Turkish outlet Hurriyet: “When we heard the news that he was taken to Dortyol Hospital, we especially went and looked but he was not there.”
Atsu’s international team-mate Mubarak Wakaso, who plays in Belgium for K.A.S Eupen, has echoed this with a statement. The midfielder said: “Following yesterday’s update from the club that Christian had been pulled out alive, we are yet to confirm Christian’s whereabouts.”
Hatayspor’s sporting director Taner Savut is also believed to be buried under the rubble. The earthquake came just hours after Atsu scored a 97th-minute winner for his side against Kasimpasa on Sunday.
The devastating first earthquake measured at a 7.8 magnitude on the Richter Scale with the second at 7.5 – which struck in the early hours of Monday morning.
Turkish footballer Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan died as a result of the earthquake in his home country.
The goalkeeper, 28, was reported missing yesterday on Monday, and his body was later found under rubble, but he was unable to be saved.
