Twelve Nigerian cyclists are currently in Accra, Ghana participating in the 19th African Road Cycling Championships, which started February 8 and will run through the 13th, courtesy of the Delta State Sports Commission.
Technical Director of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, CFN, Bashir Mohammed who disclosed this said that the cyclists are taking part in four categories namely Women Youth, Women Junior, Women Elite and Men Elite.
“The cyclists in the Women Elite and Junior categories will take part in the Individual Time Trials and Road Race while the Women Youth team will participate in the Team Time Trials and Road Race”, Mohammed said.
He added that “in the Men Elite, the lone entrant will take part in the Individual Time Trials and Road Race”.
The participating cyclists are Osaretin Godwin, Peace Olawale, Hikinat Sulaimon and Victoria Lawal in the Women Youth and Aishat Arogundade in the Women Junior..
The Women Elite entrants are Ese Ukpeseraye, Tombrapa Grikpa, Tawakalt Yekeen and Mary Samuel while the lone male entrant is Aka Kurotimi in the Elite category.
The accompanying officials are Kingsley Odiri, chief coach and Moses Omozusi, assistant coach.
Meanwhile, the Technical Director disclosed that for the first time, Nigeria will be participating in the African Para Cycling Championships also holding in Ghana, adding that the two cyclists in this category will be supported by Mr. Femi Thomas, a member of the CFN Board.
The event which holds from February 15-17 will feature Qodri Ajibade who will be the lead cyclist for Tijjani, a blind cyclist in the Tandem event.
Meanwhile in the Women’s Youth Time Trials decided early Friday, Team Nigeria won the gold medal, Bashir disclosed.
