South Africa’s Bafana Bafana took charge of the group C qualifiers of the 2026 Fifa World Cup with a 2-1 win over Benin Republic in Durban.
Bafana Bafana dominated the match but had their poor scoring touch to blame for the low score. They had expected a bigger win especially when Percy Tau opened the scoring in just two minutes to bring his national team tally to 14 goals.
Khuliso Mudau, the Mamelodi Sundowns right back, increased Bafana’s lead on the stroke of halftime, tapping home after Tau and Themba Zwane combined around Benin’s area.
Bafana were guilty of giving Benin’s skipper Steve Mounie his side’s consolation goal in the 69th minute, with dependable midfielder Teboho Mokoena guilty of losing possession in front of Ronwen Williams’ goal.
South Africa is the only team that have won in the group so far with Nigeria drawing against Lesotho and Zimbabwe holding Rwanda. The Super Eagles will tackle Zimbabwe on Sunday, Benin will play Lesotho, while South African will take on Rwanda on Tuesday.
