Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor a.k.a Rema has cancelled all his shows for the remaining part of 2023 due to illness.
The ‘Calm Down’ crooner took to Instagram to announce to his fans that he was taking a break from touring after so many months on the road and it breaks his heart to take a rest.
“It has been years of touring, I have ignored my health and I need time to recuperate. 2024 we go again, love.”
He was scheduled to perform December 9 at the Hey Neighbour Festival in South Africa and then do some shows in Abuja, Lagos and Benin City where Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki had planned a home coming concert for the Rema on December 21.
But would have to wait till next year to catch a glimpse of the artist whose song ‘Calm Down’ took the world of music by the storm and also making Afrobeats a widely accepted genre in all continents.
Accepting the first-ever Billboard Music Award for best Afrobeats song earlier this month, Rema thanked his fans and called the prize “a celebration of unity and the global domination of Afrobeats”.
Rema recently was at London’s 20,000-seater O2 arena to do his thing. He used the occasion to draw attention to the Benin Bronzes, which are 19th Century artefacts of huge cultural significance that were looted by British colonialists and many of which remain in the British Museum today.
“My ancestors’ bronzes sit in the museum of this very city so I remade mine,” Rema said on social media, explaining the visuals in his London show.
