Police teargas students protesting killing of colleagues by armed robbers
The Police in Bauchi Monday dispersed with teargas students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Yelwa Campus, who were protesting the killing of their colleague by armed robbers last Saturday night.
Joseph Agbaidu, a final year Geology student was fatally stabbed during a robbery around 7.00pm as he was returning to his abode after studies in the Yelwa area.
“Agabaidu, a final year Geology student based in Otukpo LGA but an indigene of Ankpa LGA of Logo State, was fatally stabbed around 7 pm on Saturday as assailants attempted to forcefully take his phone,” one of the students said.
“Despite immediate efforts to get him medical help, Agabaidu succumbed to his injuries and passed away yesterday (Sunday) morning.
“This tragic event echoes a similar incident last December when another Benue student lost his life in a phone-related struggle,”
Consequently, the students embarked on a peaceful protest Monday, but were prevented from doing so by the Police who blocked the school gate with their armored tanks.
This led to an escalation of tension in the campus as the student refused to back down, they were subsequently teargassed by the police.
