Manchester United will not hesitate to axe goalkeeper Andre Onana after his latest gaffe in the Champions League contributed to United’s exit.
United are reported by Teamtalk to be eyeing Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to replace Onana, who cost United a fee which will ultimately reach £47.1m – making him the third-most costly goalkeeper in the history of the game. But he has failed to live up to expectations, letting in 15 champions league goals including the one by Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coleman leaving United staring at a record of four defeats from their six matches played. It was also the club’s sixth home defeat in all competitions so far this season.
And while it is not clear if a move for the 6ft 6in Georgia keeper will be made in January.
While Onana has excelled with the ball at his feet this season, there remain questions over his shot-stopping capabilities – while his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations next year will render him unavailable for a few weeks.
The Cameroon international is a signing dependent on Ten Hag’s style of play, which puts his position under question. Should the manager be sacked, Onana may find that his place in the side is no longer guaranteed.
Mamardashvili is his top choice to replace Onana between the sticks with a €40m swoop being readied in 2024.
