Former Real Madrid and Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has questioned Chelsea’s decision to let central defender Antonio Rudiger leave the club for Real Madrid.
Rudiger, who left Chelsea and joined Los Blancos on a Bosman move in 2022, has emerged as one of the most in-form performers for his club this campaign. The 30-year-old has helped his side register 12 clean sheets in 24 appearances across all competitions this season.
Ozil, who played alongside Rudiger for the German national team, was in full agreement and took to social media platform X to both praise his old team-mate and criticise Chelsea for allowing him to leave, a decision which he believes has contributed to their recent struggles.
‘Prime Toni Rudiger is just the world’s best defender at the moment. Incredible season for my former club Real Madrid,’ he wrote shortly after Real’s 1-0 victory over Mallorca.
