Suspended Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu has been released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after being questioned Tuesday on her role in the transfer of N585m funds meant for palliatives in some States into a private account linked to her.
Ms. Edu was a guest of the EFCC throughout Tuesday, she was booked in at about 8.am and was allowed to go home around 7.pm.
“She was given a bail Tuesday night. I want to tell you that the investigation still continues,” said EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale.
The EFCC also granted Ms. Edu’s predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, bail following the investigations into the mismanagement of N37.1 billion fund during her tenure in the President Mohammadu Buhari regime.
But according to NAN reports Halima Shehu, the suspended National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, was still undergoing investigation at the EFCC.
Ms Shehu was responsible for overseeing the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari to give succour to vulnerable groups and individuals.
It was gathered that the EFCC has confiscated the travelling documents of Ms Edu and Umar-Farouq.
“The commission has seized the passports of the two ministers, Sadiya Shehu and Betta Edu. We have also seized Mrs Halima Shehu’s passport pending the conclusion of investigations. The commission does not want to risk having any of them leave the country while they still have questions to answer,” said an official of the EFCC.
