Following the escalating cases of kidnapping in and around the Federal Capital Territory, the Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, Wednesday launched a Special Intervention Squad to curb the activities of criminals in the FCT.
Abuja environs have been rocked by spates of kidnappings, including the abduction of a seven member family in the Bwari area of the FCT, one of the family member, Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar and two other girls have been killed by the kidnappers who are demanding for a N100m ransom.
The special squad is made up of officers who are specially trained and prepared to tackle issues of abduction.
The deployment included officers from the tactical units from the Force, helicopter, drones, specialised vehicles, and K9, among others.
Meanwhile President Bola Tinubu has been meeting with security chiefs to discuss the rising cases of kidnappings and killings around the country.
Tinubu condemned the abductions as “disturbing, ungodly and sinister” and touted education as “the antidote to the troubles agitating the nation,” according to a statement from presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale.
“There is no weapon against poverty that is as potent as learning,” the statement said. “Security agencies are acting with dispatch to immediately address the current challenge (while) all required resources, policies and plans will be rolled out soon for the massive education of Nigerian youths.”
