Nigerian music diva and Grammy Award winner Temilade Oyeniyi a.k.a Tems disclosed that while growing up she bullied for the tone of her voice, which sounded more like that of a boy.
She said during an interview with The Cut that girls in her peer group made her feel that her voice was ugly and that had a hold on her.
“I was bullied to the point of tears and was a target of ridicule. This led to the belief that I sounded like a boy, or a frog, with the impression that my voice was ugly,” said Tems
“I was always in my own little world. When I did make friends, I would try to make them sing my songs and other girls had these sweet, high voices and my voice had a bass.”
However, Tems grew up to be a world super star, starting off in 2020 with a collaboration with Wizkid on ‘Essence.’
Her big moment in entertainment came when she won the Grammy Award In February 2023, with the song “Wait for You’ a featuring Drake.
