Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro, and attacking midfielder Moses Simon, have insisted that the team is on course to win the African Cup of Nations title despite their low goal scoring in the group A pairing.
The Super Eagles’ minimal goal scoring is source of concern for Nigerian fans as the Competition heads into the knockout stage in Cote d’Ivoire.
Nigeria finished second in group A with seven points after drawing with surprise team of the tournament Equatorial Guinea and posting a 1-0 win over Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau. Equatorial Guinea top the group also with seven points but their eight goals haul in the group gave them the edge. They beat the hosts 4-0 and Guinea Bissau 4-2.
Speaking on the Super Eagles goals record Peseiro said: “The main point is that we conceded no goals and we scored one. If we keep doing that we can reach the final.
“My responsibility is to choose the best way to win this competition. I chose another strategy and the players believe in it — to not concede goals because we will score at least one,”
Speaking in the same vein Moses Simon who won man of the match against Guinea Bissau added.
“We don’t care if we score 20 goals, the most important thing for us is the victory.”
