Hosts Cote d’Ivoire has sacked their coach Jean-Louis Gasset after the Elephants put up a dismal performance in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
After a good start with Guinea Bissau in group A, the Elephants lost to Nigeria and then subjected the home fans to the worst form of football torment by losing 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in their last group game. It was the heaviest home defeat in Ivory Coast history and they are the first Afcon host to lose two group games since they did so in 1984.
Though Cote d’Ivoire are still hopeful of a place in the round of 16 based on current third finishers rating, they decided to relieve the 70-year-old Gasset of his job. The Elephants will now be guided by Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s assistants, on an interim basis.
Ghana Blacks Stars also showed their coach Chris Hughton the door after they crashed out of the tournament in the most lamentable fashion. In their last group B game Ghana squandered a two goal lead in the added minutes to finish with two points in the group having also drawn with Egypt in the same circumstances and losing to Cape Verde.
“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external
“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”
