Former Nigerian national team captain Olumide Oyediji said basketball is set to take a different turn for good with the coming of the West African Basketball Classic.
Clubs from four West African countries Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana are billed to compete in the maiden tournament scheduled for February 24-March 2 in Lome, Togo.
Oyedeji said during a chat with news reporters Thursday in Lagos that the initiative is an idea Independent group of people who came together to promote basketball in the West African zone 3.
“The WABC is a collaboration with FIBA zone 3 and it is our aim to promote basketball in the West African region.
“We have good teams that will deliver first class games and produce quality players.
“Apart from that we are also going to organise clinics for the youths in Cities of the participating countries
First edition start in 16 Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin one of the basketball,” said Oyedeji WABC president.
Some of the participating clubs include Gidi Giants Nigeria, Kwara Falcons Nigeria, Aspac Togo, Swallows Togo, Elan Coton Benin and Customs Braves Ghana
Oyedeji added that after the first round in Lome, Togo there will be a final four contest in Ghana June 8-12, followed by an All Star game later in Abuja.
Notably, a championship trophy and medals await the top-performing team, first runner-up, and second runner-up as the winner will embark on a playing tour of China sponsored by PEAK.
