South African coach Hugo Broos has admitted that Nigeria’s Super Eagles are the favourites to go through in their semi-final clash on Wednesday, but they have their sights on creating another upset win in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria is the only top five African ranked nation still in the tournament, Cup favourites Senegal, Egypt and Morocco were sent packing in the round of 16. And Nigeria, based on their drive so far in the tournament, are expected to beat South Africa ranked 12th in the continent and reach their fourth final.
South Africa has never beaten Nigeria in any competitive game. Out of 11 meetings, Nigeria has won six times while South Africa just once, with four draws.
“We’re happy and motivated to play in the semi-final,” said Broos.
“For many people it is unexpected. It’s more than 20 years since South Africa was in the last four.”We will be playing another very good team,
“I think Nigeria are the favourites but it’s not always the favourites that win.
On his path Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro said he expects his wards to elevate their game against South Africa who according to him are no pushovers.
“We must play a high level match as we know the power of the opponent,” said the 63-year-old Portuguese.
“Everyone said Morocco will beat them because they have players in the top European leagues. What happened? Morocco lost.
“South Africa is well organised. They have let in one goal more than us. They play compact and they don’t allow space.”
The winner of the clash will play either hosts Cote d’Ivoire or Democratic Republic of Congo in the final on Sunday at the Alassane Outtara Stadium in Abidjan.
The loser will contest the third place play-off match at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan on Saturday.
