Someone in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Sycophancy Orchestra was chirping that the good showing by the Super Eagles so far in Cote d’Ivoire, was down to the President’s midas touch.
Success they say has many fathers. The losers will go and search for their own father, wherever they can find them, they never always find one.And so who can fault President Tinubu for claiming that the success enjoyed so far by the Super Eagles? That person would be Atiku Abubakar; he is probably somewhere in Dubai with mouth open wide in amazement about such a claim.
He has already fired back criticism at the coach Tinubu asking him to apply such a winning formula to curb the rising cases of crimes, terror, ‘common stealing’ of public funds and worst of all the free fall of the naira into doldrums.
Word from the streets across the country paints a picture of gloom. In Niger State, Kano State people are already pouring out venting their hunger and anger. The Gencos and the Discos are not helping matters too, they continue to serve the nation more darkness.
There is so much frustration and confusion almost everyone needs a shrink to keep their head balanced. Things are not looking good to the extent the Anambra State government couldn’t differentiate between Tanya Okpala and Jackling Okweze on who to rescue from the swamp of depression.
There are so many people on the edge including the tribal and religious bigots who amplified the sour slogans of incompetent politicians running for office. No one, except of course the ruling class is spared of the burden foisted on the citizens by the never ending harsh social and economic temperature.
For so many of the ordinary folks, rather than dream about how to make a successful living in their own country and travel around the world in luxury, their dreams are now how to join the ‘Japa’ train to Europe or Canada, to do odd jobs with aim of earning $10 an hour and then send some change back home to build a house for themselves and their families.
A good number of these Nigerians are well into their middle ages and looking at to 60. For them it is never too late. The young and unmarried are ready to risk it all by crossing the desert or stowaway in the rudder of a ship. Sadly the majority of the people making this trek wind up in chains of desperation.
People who should be building their country, young men and women who should be preparing themselves to raise families of their own, involuntarily submitting themselves into modern form of slavery, following the path of some of their kins bundled from their homes back in the 1800s and lost forever in the diaspora. The only difference now in 2024, there is that there are no chains, no branding irons and no padlocks to their lips.
The Super Eagles doing well at the Africa Cup of Nations is a temporary relief from the pains and frustrations felt by many Nigerians, Everyone is happy with their progress into the semi-final where they will take on South Africa on Wednesday. Even Peter Obi who when he was governor of Anambra State, sparsely supported sports development, is in Cote d’Ivoire cheering the Super Eagles, an amazing show of togetherness.
The Super Eagles have carried on with a team spirit never seen for such a long time, every player is fighting, one for all and all for one… a total commitment to the cause of winning the title…it would be so rewarding for the team to lift the AFCON trophy.
Only if Nigerian politicians can imbibe that same team spirit with which the boys are riding high in Cote d’Ivoire. That’s what they ought to be doing, working like a team to solve the nation’s problems and not compounding the situation with their inept and corrupt disposition.
Everyone, in the executive, legislative and judicial branch should focus their attention on rebuilding the country destroyed by so many years of looting, colluding, gang-banging by unpatriotic elements.
All through the 25 years of democratic governance, there hasn’t been one President who tried to pull the country and its citizens towards progress, unity and love for the nation; rather they dance to the discordant tunes of religion and ethnic jingoism. No leader has ever been tough on crime, except when chasing after their political opponents. Every president is surrounded by a cabal of criminally minded individuals who are high on the drug of self aggrandisement, rather than be humble and pursue goals and policies that would be beneficial to the society.
From the comfort of his recharging point in Paris, this is hoping that President Tinubu will return fully energised to tackle the criminals in government houses, criminals on the highways and criminals in the forest making life unbearable for Nigerians.
Cheap shot some might like to say.They may be right because the minister of information and other cronies of the President are already yapping, “Oh give him some time, he is barely seven months on the saddle,” ” Tinubu has what it takes to take Nigeria out of the woods.”
This was the same song they sang when Muhammadu Buhari was in power, four years went by, nothing happened, another fours went by nothing still happened.
Nigerians by hook and crook found themselves in the same ship sailing the rough seas and the captain cannot read correctly where the compass is pointing and change course for calmer waters. Like a drunken sailor, he yells, “Subsidy is gone” and things have tumbled down since then.
In this wandering and lost sail into nowhere; there has to be a change of course, otherwise the ship would soon hit the rocks.
