Access Bank has begun the process of appointing a new Chief Executive Officer, 24 hours after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe in a helicopter crash in the USA, on his way to watch the American Super Bowl.
Wigwe died along with his wife Doreen and only son Chizi, former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group), Abimbola Ogunbanjo and the crew when the chopper crashed in bad weather around 10.00 pm Friday night February 9 in Boulder City on the border between California and Nevada about 96km from Las Vegas. Wigwe’s Special Assistant, Faleye Olusola, who was supposed to travel in the helicopter, opted to travel by road.
US National Transport Safety Board official Michael Graham said during a press conference Sunday afternoon:“Flight track data ended about a quarter-mile from the wreckage location.
“The wreckage site shows the helicopter impacted the terrain in a nose-low and right-bank angle.”
The 57-year-old Wigwe and his business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede bought Access Bank in 2002, the bank grew to become the 4th largest bank in Nigeria and currently expanding its business across the continent, acquiring banks in countries including Kenya, South Africa and Botswana.
In letter of condolence signed by Access Holdings group company secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, the company lamented the sudden death Mr. Wigwe and quoted the chairman Access Holdings Abubakar Jimoh as saying: The Access Family has suffered a major loss with the passing of Dr. Wigwe.
“In line with company policy the board will soon announce the appointment of an acting group Chief Executive Officer we remain confident that Access will build further on Dr. Wigwe’s legacy of growth and operational excellence.”
Meanwhile there have been reactions from across the world. President Bola Tinubu said it was “shocking beyond comprehension”.
The French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on his X page: “France has lost a friend, Herbert Wigwe, President of the French Nigeria Business Council. A humanistic and talented entrepreneur. He tirelessly worked to strengthen the relationship between our two countries. Our heartfelt thoughts go to his family and loved ones.”
Okonjo-Iweala World Trade Organisation director-general wrote: “Terribly saddened by the news of the terrible loss of Herbert Wigwe … his wife and son as well as Bimbo Ogunbanjo in a helicopter crash.
“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,”
Femi Otedola: “I will cherish and fondly remember my memories of time spent together with him over the years. Herbie, we will all miss you.”
