Nigerian 4x400m mixed relay team at the African Games stole the show Tuesday night as they topped the day by winning the gold medal and also setting a new African record.
All hope was lost by the time Sikiru Adeyemi handed over the baton to Omolara Omotosho, as Botswana took the lead with a good 30m. But Omotosho making a comeback to athletics after a long break dug deep and kept up the pace.
She opened up at the home stretch and over took Botswana’s anchor Lydia Jele, the charged up spectators at University of Ghana Stadium were on their screaming best as Omotosho coasted home in 3.13. 26secs, which erased the 3.13.60 also set by team. The performance also put Nigeria a good qualification position for the Olympics 2024.
Emmanuel Ifeanyi Ojeli had started and handed over the race to Patience Okon-George, but a strong Botswana third leg Bayapo Ndori proved too much for Sikiru to handle.
Speaking on her great come back Omotosho said: “I was closing up and told myself that I can do it and just kept on going.”
