Ruth Usoro and Chukwuebuka Enekewchi won the first batch of athletics gold medals for Nigeria at the African Games on-going at the University of Ghana Accra bringing relief to Nigerian athletics coaches who had looked forward to that moment all evening.
Enekwechi, who is the defending champion from Rabat 2019 heaved 21.06m to clinch the gold in the short putt. He beat off the challenge from Egyptian duo Mostapha Hassan and Mohamed Magdi Hamza. They threw 20. 70m and 20.29m respectively. Nigeria’s Moses Emeka Ugwu who was also in the final contest threw 16.43m to place fifth.
Sade took the bronze in the women hammer throw with 68. 92m. She was beaten by Algerians Zaha Tatar who took the gold with 69.65 and Zouina Bouzebra 68.97m.
It was a delight to watch Usoro doing justice to the women triple jump, an event she is expected to win and she was untouchable with jump of 13.80m. She will be back to contest the women long jump where compatriots Ese Brume and Pristina Oluchi Ochonogor will also be present to make their case for the gold.
