A stampede Friday at the distribution of food items by the Nasarawa State government turned tragic as two female students of the Nasarawa State University Keffi, were crushed to death and several others injured.
The students had gathered to receive the bags of rice, but the crowd got out of control and a stampede occurred.
“Students rushed into the arena where the rice was assembled, and that led to the stampede,” spokesperson for Nasarawa State University Habu Ekpo said.
Videos published by local media showed hundreds of students struggling to get to the bags of rice. Some were seen leaving the arena with up to two bags as others rushed to get theirs.
Nasarawa State governor Abdulahi Sule lamented the incident and called on the University management and security agents to investigate what went wrong with the distribution.
“ I pray their souls rest in peace. Our thoughts and condolences go to their families and friends at this moment of grief,” said a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Addra Ibrahim.
“These young people’s lives cut short at their prime under such circumstances is painful.
”The governor has since directed the authorities of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi and security agencies to commence an immediate investigation into the unfortunate occurrence to unveil those behind it.”
