Sprinter Favour Ofili played a key leadership role as Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m secured Olympics 2024 ticket at last weekend’s World Relays in Bahamas.
Ofili had to dig deep to come up with a 10 seconds run in her split to keep the team in the loop in the second attempt to qualify. The team also featuring Justina Tiana Eyakponbeyan, Olayinka Olajide and Tima Godbless shook off their initial fidget exchange in their first qualification attempt and came up with a 42.71 season best to qualify for Paris 2024.
” I’m Super excited we got the job done at the world relay in Bahamas,” Ofilli posted in her Instagram account.
She noted that qualifying for the Olympics more than made up for the stress and pressure the team endured. She added that going to the Games between July and August the team must improve to be on the podium.
“Words can’t express the amount of pressure we felt.
” Looking back at the video I can say I’m proud of what we did, this is just the beginning and there is still room for improvement. With God everything is possible.”
With Ofili in good form and joining the women sub 11.00 club, a probable inclusion of more tested runners in the team, Nigeria could be assured of a medal in Paris.
The last time the women won a medal was in Beijing 2008 where the team featuring Damola Osayomi, Franka Idoko, Gloria Kemasode, Halimat Ismaila and Agness Osazuwa won silver.
