Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara, said Tuesday that his predecessor, Nyesom Wike left a huge debt portfolio running into billions.
He stated that the debts were for contracts executed, but were not fully funded, stressing that the contractors who handled the projects are now pressuing his government to clear the debts.
“Most of the projects commissioned (by the last administration), the contractors are still coming for their balance payments running into millions and billions,” said Fubara during the commissioning of a 10.98km Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Road, in Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
“I have said I don’t want to talk because I am part of that system, but when they keep pushing me, I will say it so that we will see the nyansh of the fowl.”
Speaking on the new road, which was flagged off by Abia State governor Alex Otti, Fubara added: “This road was previously not completed but has now been completed.
“It should be noted. For the records, this contract was awarded to CCECC on August 14, 2023, by this administration.
“This project was awarded N6.7bn, and I can say boldly that no kobo is remaining. We have paid the contractor completely without owing. The purpose of this is to let the world know that if there is one problem this administration has, it is debt.
Fubara and Wike are at both end of the stick over the running of the State. Lawmakers and local government chairmen loyal to Wike are dragging governor Fubara as he attempts to stamp his authority in the governance of the Rivers State.
Fubara Monday hinted that he would be looking into the activities of the Wike during his time as governor. He said while swearing in Dagogo Iboroma as the new Attorney Genea and Commissioner for Justice in the state.
