Finidi George’s spell as Super Eagles coach may have come to an abrupt end as the Nigeria Football Federation announced it’s intentions to hire a foreign technical adviser for the national team.
This development was part of a communique of an executive committee meeting of the nation’s football ruling body held Wednesday June 12 in Abuja.
The NFF noted that Super Eagles are in a precarious situation in the group C World Cup qualifiers after drawing three games and losing to Benin Republic last Monday in Cote d’Ivoire.
“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologized to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent very poor returns of the Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
“The NFF pledges to work assiduously and put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
“The Executive Committee has resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” read the communique made available to the media.
The NFF added that technical department would be beefed up with “more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect.”
There was no word on the role Finidi who took over the reins of the team from Jose Peseiro in March would play.
The former Super Eagles winger had won only one match in five outings with team. His ability to handle the Super Eagles came into question after Benin Republic came from a goal down to beat the Super Eagles with two cheaply conceded goals in their last qualifier in Abidjan.
