Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is the undisputed champion of the African throws after he won a hat-trick of Shot Put gold at the African Championships ongoing in Douala, Cameroon.
Enekwechi heaved 21.22m to erase his own Championships record set in the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius. It was his third consecutive title after he won in Asaba 2018.
He will also be contesting in the discus throw later in the championships and from all reckoning he remains the athlete to beat in the event.
“Enekwechi is on top of his game and in very good shape,” coach Gabriel Opuana.
“Hopefully as we prepare for the Olympics our target is to be on the podium. We have to make the dominance in Africa count.”
Also in the women’s discus throw it was a Nigerian 1,2,3. Ashley took the gold with 59.30m a championship record, while African Games champion Obiageli Amaechi 58.80m and Chioma Onyekwere 59.01m settled for silver and bronze respectively.
In Saturday’s events Nigerian sprinters are in the mix for gold as they compete in the 100m finals, while the Nigerian mixed relay team will have the opportunity to rehearse for the Olympics.
