Barley a month after his Super Eagles coaching stint ended, Finidi George has signed on to be Rivers United coach.
The former Super Eagles winger was presented Wednesday by Rivers United officials in Port Harcourt and they are banking on him to take the club to greater heights.
“Rivers United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Finidi George as our new Technical Manager,” the club said in a statement Wednesday.
“Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years.
“His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023.
“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”
Finidi resigned his position as Super Eagles coach after the team’s dismal outing in the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in May. He had only been confirmed as coach in April. His was the shortest ever tenure of any Super Eagles coach. He opted out when the Nigeria Football Federation decided to appoint a foreign coach without informing him.
Finidi who won the NPFL title in 2023 with Enyimba would be looking to prove his critics wrong with his home town club, which metamorphed from Sharks of Port Harcourt. It was one of the local clubs Finidi honed his skills before going to Europe to win the Champions League title with Ajax Amsterdam and then after also playing in Spain and England.
