Nigeria’s women team the Super Falcons are walking on slippery ground in the group C of the Paris 2024 Olympics soccer event. They lost to Brazil 1-0 in a game they could have wrapped up in the first half of the game.
Blessing Demehin had her shot at goal parried by the Brazilian keeper, and Uche Christy Ucheibe missed a couple of chances in the opening minutes of the game.
Then Brazil turned the tables around against the Super Falcons. Veteran Marta opened scoring, but her goal was ruled offside. Moments after she played a sumptuous reverse ball to Gabi Nunes, who took two touches and rifled the ball into the net. While the evergreen Marta struck the post in the second half, Brazil held on to secure all three points.
In the other group C match Spain beat Japan 2-1 in Nantes. Japan opened the scoring in the 13th minute in spectacular fashion through Aoba Fujino, who curled a powerful free-kick around the Spain wall and into the top-right corner. The world champions came storming back in the 22nd minute courtesy of Aitana Bonmati’s clinical finish. Spain then kept their foot on the gas and finally struck with just over 15 minutes to go, when Mariona Caldentey polished off a well-worked one-two.
Nigeria will play against Spain next while Japan takes on Brazil
