One of Nigeria’s most celebrated music icons, Onyeka Onwenu has died at 72.
Miss Onwenu a.k.a Elegant Stallion” slumped while performing Tuesday night at the birthday party of Emzor Pharmaceutical boss Stella Okoli and she later passed on at Reddington Hospital, Lagos.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.
“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” said an eyewitness at the occasion.
Onwenu born January 31, 1952, was one the top female stars back in the 1980s and 90s. Her song “One Love” became more of anthem.
She was also an actress, a broadcast journalist and human rights activist and was famous for one of her documentaries titled “Nigeria, Squandering of Riches.”
However, she dabbled into politics and this did not go down well with some of her fans who saw her as a voice for the oppressed.
