Three Nigerian ladies are in the final of the women’s long event of the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is the first in the of the Olympics, Nigeria will be having three finals in the final of the track and field event.
Ese Brume, bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympics in the group jump 6.76m behind US athlete Tara Davis Woodhall who did 6.90m to top the group. Ruth Usoro also group A had the third best effort with a jump of 6.68m. And in the group B qualifier straight from the grassroots to world level Prestina Oluchi Ochonoghor, also booked her place in the final, she had the third best jump behind Italian Larrisa Ipachino with 6.87m and 2020 Olympics gold medalist Makaila Mihambo did 6.86m. Burkina Faso’s Marte Koala with 6.59m also made it to the final.
The long jump is always unpredictable and any woman with a good jump can clinch the gold. Brume is top contender, and this could be her Olympics, if she can reproduce her personal best of 7.17m.
In the men’s 200m repechage Udodi Onwuzurike qualified for the semi-final with 20.51 secs the lowest time of the three heats and in the women’s 400m Ella Onojuvwevwo also qualified with 50.59 from the repechage.
