As the African Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Benin Repulic inches closer, coach Gernot Rohr said another victory over the Super Eagles cannot be ruled out.
Benin Republic’s Cheetahs came from a goal down to beat the Super Eagles during their World Cup qualifier in June. The game cost Super Eagles coach George Finidi his job, while Rohr roared with laughter having earned an upset win over the team, he led to the 2018 World Cup in Russia but was unceremoniously dismissed before the start of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
The Super Eagles will be at home at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo on September 7, to play against the Cheetahs three months after the humiliating defeat in Abdijan, Cote d’Ivoire.
“We will be happy to play (Nigeria) in Uyo, which is really a fantastic stadium; one of the most beautiful stadia in Africa,” Rohr told the Nation.
“In fact, I’m happy for Nigeria that they can play again there (in Uyo) because we could not play there for several reasons during my last two years with the Super Eagles.
“So, I will be happy to see them there and we will have a fantastic game there despite the fact that some of our players are without clubs since they are out of contract and waiting for new contracts.
“Which is not the same scenario with Nigeria, but we will be ready to present a good team which should be able to make a good match in Uyo.”
