Two police officers have lost their lives and others injured after members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group, attacked a police checkpoint Sunday in Abuja.
The group members armed with improvised explosives devices, machetes and knives stormed the police checkpoint at Wuse Junction by the traffic light and unleashed terror on the policemen on duty. Two officers were killed, three others remain on danger list. Three patrol vehicles were also set ablaze in the unprovoked attack.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed retribution for the perpetuators. He said some arrests have been made.
Also speaking FCT police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, said the situation has been brought under control and investigations continue.
This attack marks a significant escalation in tensions between the proscribed IMN and Nigerian security forces. The IMN has been involved in numerous clashes with authorities since the group was banned in 2019.
