Nigeria Football Federation Tuesday announced the appointment of former German international Bruno Labbadia as the coach of the Super Eagles.
Labbadia played as a striker for Bayern Munich and Kaiserslautern. He won the Bundesliga in 1994 with Bayern and the DFB-Pokal in 1990 with FC Kaiserslautern and was capped twice by the German Machine.
“The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect,” said NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, in a statement.
Labbadi’s first day in office will be on September 7 in Uyo, where the Super Eagles will clash with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier. He would be facing German born Gernot Rohr who coached the Super Eagles between 2016 and 2021.
Labbadia will be the sixth German coach that has handled the Super Eagles. Others were Karl-Heinz Marotzke 1970 and 1974, Gottlieb Göller 1981, Manfred Höner 1988-1989, Berti Vogts 2007-2008.
The Super Eagles job would be the first international role for the 58-years- old Labbadia who had coaching stints with Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, Bayer Leverkusen.
