Up and coming grassroots high jumper, Treasure Omosivwe delivered on her promise to win gold for Edo State at National Youth Games at the on-going in Asaba, Delta State.
Omosivwe, cleared a height of 1.59m to land the gold medal she had looked forward to winning after she was denied a medal during her maiden outing at the NYG last year.
During the screening for the 2024 event she was almost edged out by Games officials despite her birth certificate and National Identification Number confirming that she is 15 and eligible. Officials claimed that she was too tall to be 15.
“That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in sports,” said Edo State Sports Commission executive chairman Yusuf Alli at the Stephen Keshi Stadium as he celebrated with his athlete.
“We have to stand our ground and insist she must compete. In Edo we never use over aged athletes.
“I’m glad she has won, we don’t settle for silver.”
