Delta State long jumper Gift Gowan sent tongues wagging when he jump 7.03m to win the gold of the National Youth Games.
Going by his age, many argued that it was impossible for a 15 years-old to achieve that feat which surpassed the world record for that age group.
However, coach Edirin Owivri who is grooming the lad submitted that the athlete was indeed 15 and there are documents to back up the claim.
“He competed last year in the 400m. The records are there,” said coach Edirin.
“He was also registered in the MTN/MOC schools Championships so all the records are there.”
He added that in the days ahead, Gowan will proved that he is not overaged by coming up with improved performances.
“He is not yet at his peak jumping 7.03m at the NYG. He is not going to sleep, in the days to come we would be working on him to prove that his best is yet to come.
“He started with 6.99m and even the 7.03m he was a few millimeters off the board,” coach Edirin added.
